Huilo Huilo at a glance
Huilo Huilo is a biological reserve in the Los Ríos region. It is not part of Pucón and not part of Huerquehue National Park, so it has its own entrances, its own tickets and its own rules. The reserve is best known for the Salto Huilo Huilo waterfall and for forest trails with separate entry portals.
Most visitors from Pucón go on an organized day trip. One operator lists a program of 9 hours that leaves Pucón at 08:00, drives via Lican Ray, Panguipulli and Puerto Fuy, and includes transport and admission to the attractions. This page is an independent guide and is not run by the reserve or by any tour operator.

How the day trip from Pucón works
One published example, listed in 2026.
Departure and length
The listed program starts at 08:00 in Pucón and lasts 9 hours. That figure covers the whole day, including the road. It does not tell you how long the drive takes, so ask the operator for the driving time and the time you get at each stop before you book.
The route
The trip runs via Lican Ray, Panguipulli and Puerto Fuy. Lican Ray lies on the Calafquén lake, which has its own page. Because Huilo Huilo is in Los Ríos, you leave the Araucanía during the day.
Lican Ray guide →What the price covers
The listing names transport and admission to the attractions as included. Lunch is not mentioned, so ask what it includes. The CLP 65,000 is a tour price. It is not the entry price of the reserve, which is shown in the table below.

Entry prices by portal
The reserve sells separate tickets for separate areas. Prices as published by the reserve in 2026, in Chilean pesos.
| Ticket | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|
| Huilo Huilo portal | CLP 6,500 | CLP 4,500 |
| La Leona portal | CLP 6,500 | CLP 4,500 |
| Puma portal | CLP 6,500 | CLP 4,500 |
| Ciervos portal | CLP 6,500 | CLP 4,500 |
| Caverna Volcánica portal | CLP 6,500 | CLP 4,500 |
| Fullpack Chucao | From CLP 18,500 | From CLP 14,000 |
| Tripack Colibrí | From CLP 13,000 | From CLP 10,000 |
The reserve states that prices can change without notice. There is no single entry price for everything, because each portal is its own product. A day-trip price may already include some of these tickets, so compare the listing before you buy a portal ticket on top.
The Salto Huilo Huilo waterfall
The waterfall is reached through the Huilo Huilo portal. The reserve's own help page notes that the fall can run without water at times. Nobody can promise the flow on your day, so treat a full waterfall as a possibility and not as a given. The photo shows the spray at the fall.
The Caverna Volcánica is a separate portal in Huilo Huilo. Do not confuse it with the lava caves that tourism sources list as an activity on the Villarrica volcano near Pucón. They are different places with different operators.

What to check before you go
Details that decide whether the day works.
Which portals you want
Pick the portals first, then choose between a guided day trip and your own transport. With 9 hours in total, you will see part of the reserve and not all of it.
Children
Child prices exist, but the age that counts as a child is not spelled out in the price list. Confirm the age definition when you buy a ticket.
Opening hours and trail access
Check the current timetable of each portal before you set out. Trails can change with the weather and the season.
Wildlife
Some portals are named after animals, but a sighting is never guaranteed. Keep your distance, do not feed animals and follow the guides' instructions.
Weather and clothing
Rain is part of the southern climate, and the cooler months are wetter. Waterproof clothing and shoes with grip suit forest paths and the area around a waterfall.

Huilo Huilo: frequently asked questions
Where is Huilo Huilo?
Huilo Huilo is a biological reserve in the Los Ríos region of Chile. It is a separate destination from Pucón, from the Villarrica volcano and from Huerquehue National Park.
Can I visit Huilo Huilo as a day trip from Pucón?
Yes, there is a published day trip. One operator lists it at CLP 65,000 in 2026, with a start at 08:00 and a length of 9 hours. Transport and admission to the attractions are included.
How long is the drive from Pucón?
The 9 hours of the day trip include the whole program, so they say little about the drive alone. The route runs via Lican Ray, Panguipulli and Puerto Fuy. Ask the operator for the driving time before you decide.
How much does entry to Huilo Huilo cost?
It depends on the portal. The Huilo Huilo portal costs CLP 6,500 for adults and CLP 4,500 for children in 2026, and the same rates apply to the La Leona, Puma, Ciervos and Caverna Volcánica portals. The Fullpack Chucao starts at CLP 18,500 and the Tripack Colibrí at CLP 13,000 for adults.
Will the Salto Huilo Huilo have water?
Not always. The reserve says the waterfall can be without water at times, so the flow on your day is not guaranteed.
Is the Caverna Volcánica the same as the lava caves near Villarrica?
No. The Caverna Volcánica is a portal inside Huilo Huilo. The lava caves near Pucón are part of the activities around the Villarrica volcano.
