Lake Villarrica at a glance

Lago Villarrica lies in the Araucanía lake and volcano region. The towns of Villarrica and Pucón both sit on its shore. They are separate bases, not two names for one town. The national tourism portal lists sailing, kayaking, water skiing and boat trips from both, depending on season and weather.

The Villarrica volcano stands above the lake. Whether you see it depends on the clouds, so do not plan around a guaranteed view. This site is an independent guide, not run by either town or by the tourism service.

Villarrica and Pucón compared

Both towns are on the lake. The difference lies in what is on their shores.

Do not mix the two up. Playa Grande and La Poza belong to Pucón and are not the beaches of Villarrica town. Read the guide to Pucón for those.

Our pick: a guided paddle near Pucón

Wind and weather change the lake quickly. This is a river trip with a guide and full gear instead of the open water.

Villarrica town and its promenade

Villarrica is a town on the lake and a natural stop on the road from Temuco to Pucón. A promenade runs along the shore, and from the water's edge you can look across the lake toward the volcano on a clear day.

Go to the shore for a walk and a look at the boats. If you plan to swim, check signs and ask locally about the day's conditions. For Calafquén and the beaches at Lican Ray, see our Lican Ray guide.

Swimming and water safety

A clear lake is not the same as a cleared beach.

Look for signs

Swimming permission and water quality vary by shore and by day. Follow posted signs and flags, and ask where you stay.

The beach app

The maritime authority DIRECTEMAR offers the Playas Chile app to tell suitable beaches from unsuitable ones. It is not a clearance for a given stretch of shore.

Emergency number

For maritime and water rescue emergencies call 137.

Boats and kayaks

Wind and weather change the lake. Use a life jacket, go out with a guide if you are unsure, and come back early.

The volcano alert and the lake

The technical volcano alert was raised from green to yellow on 4 September 2026, for higher seismic and near-surface activity. The civil protection service added an early preventive alert for the Villarrica, Pucón, Curarrehue and Panguipulli areas. This is not a red evacuation alert. The latest alert is dated, and it can change.

If you stay on the lake, find out which evacuation plan and meeting point cover your accommodation. SENAPRED, the national disaster agency, publishes evacuation plans and the Visor Chile Preparado map. Do not rely on a rule such as always going to the lake or always taking the car. Our volcano guide has the details, and the where to stay page helps you pick a base.

Getting around the lake

From Temuco to Villarrica is a little over an hour by road, and Pucón is about 20 minutes further on Route 199. These are rough driving times, not a bus timetable. From Temuco airport, allow about 1 hour 30 minutes by transfer or rental car to Villarrica or Pucón. For flights, buses and rental cars, see getting there.

Roadworks and traffic can change the time, so check the current situation before a long drive. Weather affects the lake, and our weather guide explains the seasons.

Choosing a base on the lake

Pick Villarrica if you want a town on the road from Temuco with a lakeside promenade. Pick Pucón if you want Playa Grande, La Poza and the promenade that joins them. Do not assume that one town is cheaper or quieter than the other, and compare real offers for your dates.

Whichever you choose, check the exact location of your accommodation. Being on the lake does not mean a private beach, a swimming permission or a guaranteed view of the volcano. Our where to stay page covers this in more detail.
