Rafting on the Río Trancura
Rafting, kayaking and canopy are named by the official Chilean tourism portal as activities of the Villarrica and Pucón region. On the Trancura, the trips are split into two sections. Trancura Bajo is the lower section and is advertised for beginners. Trancura Alto is the upper section and is more technical. Hydrospeed, riding the river on a board, runs on the lower river.
The rules below come from one Pucón operator. They are not a Chilean law and not a rule for every company. Compare sections, not only prices, and ask the operator about your age, health and swimming skills before you book.

Trancura sections compared
One operator's published rules, 2026. No ranking.
| Trip | Grade listed | Minimum age | Swimming | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trancura Bajo | Class III, with some rapids described differently | Ask the operator | Ask the operator | Pescador rapid is not run at winter water levels |
| Trancura Alto | Class IV, rapids up to IV/V listed | 14 years, strict | Recommended, not a condition | Marimán is not run; guests walk around it on the bank |
| Hydrospeed | Class III, lower Trancura | 14 years recommended, plus the guide's assessment | Required | Guides accompany by kayak and raft |
Grades on the operator's pages are descriptions, not a promise for every day. A river changes with the season and the water level.

The trips in detail
What the operator publishes about each one.
Trancura Bajo
The main section is advertised as class III for beginners. The same page describes some single rapids with higher or different grades, so it is not one even stretch of water. The Pescador rapid is not run at winter water levels. The operator provides a wetsuit, shoes, a windbreaker, a life jacket and a helmet. Bring swimwear and a towel.
Trancura Alto
The main description is class IV and more technical than Bajo. The list of single rapids reaches IV/V. The Marimán rapid is not run, and guests walk around it on the bank. The minimum age for this trip is 14 years, strictly. The operator calls swimming skills recommended, not a condition. That is the operator's rule, not advice to put non-swimmers on whitewater.
Hydrospeed
Hydrospeed runs on the lower Trancura and is described as class III. You must be able to swim. The recommended minimum age is 14, and the guide also judges your build for the river. Guides travel with the group by kayak and raft. Do not apply the strict Alto age rule to this trip or the other way round.
Kayak and canopy
Both are listed as regional offers, but age, weight, swimming, guide and season rules differ by operator. Do not carry the rafting rules over to them. Ask each operator for its own conditions.
Before you book
Price, season dates and the length of a trip differ by operator and are not fixed here. Ask for the figures for your date. Rely on the written rules of the operator, not on summary counters on a booking page.
Rain and high water change what the river does. A booking is no guarantee that a trip runs on your day, and the guide decides on the spot. Ask what happens if the trip is called off for water levels, and read the terms before you pay. Tell the guide about injuries, medical conditions and swimming ability at the start.

Choosing a trip
How to match the section to the group.
Mixed groups
Trancura Bajo is the section advertised for beginners. Alto has a strict minimum age of 14 at this operator and a harder main grade, so a group with different experience levels may do better on Bajo.
Experienced paddlers
Alto is described as class IV and more technical. Read the list of single rapids and ask the guide how the water level on your date changes it.
What to bring
Swimwear and a towel. Wear what the operator advises under the wetsuit, and leave valuables at your accommodation. Ask where you can store keys and phones.
Pucón rafting: frequently asked questions
Is rafting in Pucón suitable for beginners?
Trancura Bajo is advertised for beginners with a main grade of class III. Some single rapids are described with other grades, so ask the operator what to expect on your date.
What is the minimum age?
It depends on the operator and the trip. The operator listed here sets a strict minimum of 14 years for Alto and recommends 14 for hydrospeed. For Bajo, ask the operator.
Do I need to be able to swim?
For hydrospeed, yes. For Alto the operator calls it recommended, not a condition. Say honestly how well you swim when you book.
What equipment is provided?
On Bajo the operator provides a wetsuit, shoes, a windbreaker, a life jacket and a helmet. You bring swimwear and a towel.
Can I raft after heavy rain?
That is the guide's decision. Water levels change the river, and a booking does not guarantee that the trip runs.
