Pucón weather at a glance
Pucón lies at the foot of the Villarrica volcano on the lake of the same name. The seasons follow the southern hemisphere: summer runs from December to March, winter from June to August. Summer is the warmest and driest time. Winter brings the most rain, and snow gathers on the mountains.
Official climate data from the Chilean weather service (DMC) is published by station. The table below is the full monthly normal for the Maquehue station at Temuco, the regional gateway, for the period 1991 to 2020. It is a reference for the seasonal pattern and not a Pucón measurement. Lake and mountain sites near the volcano will differ in detail, so read the numbers as a guide. This is an independent guide, and a normal is not a forecast for your dates.

What each season means
Read together with the table above.
Summer: December to March
The warmest months and the lowest rainfall in the table, with January and February under 35 mm. Official tourism information recommends booking accommodation ahead for January and February, a point it makes for Lican Ray because of the higher visitor numbers. Termas Martini lists its summer holiday period as 21 December to 21 March.
Where to stay →Autumn: April and May
Temperatures drop and rainfall rises quickly, from 85.6 mm in April to 148.0 mm in May.
Winter: June to August
The coldest and wettest part of the year. June has the highest monthly rainfall in the table. The park service reports snow build-up on the trails of Huerquehue from June to September and avalanche danger in the winter in Villarrica National Park. Snow in Pucón town is not guaranteed, and neither is a ski season.
Huerquehue →Spring: September to November
Rainfall eases from 86.4 mm in September to 57.3 mm in November, and highs climb from 15.5 to 19.7 °C. Check current trail conditions before a hike, because the park service posts closures and restrictions.
Best time to visit by activity
What the weather changes.
| Activity | What matters |
|---|---|
| Volcano climb | Depends on volcanic activity and weather. A certified guide is required, and a climb is never guaranteed |
| Huerquehue hikes | Snow build-up from June to September. Part of the park is closed in 2026 |
| Lake beaches | Summer is the main season. Check local signs before swimming |
| Hot springs | Open year-round at some sites, such as Los Pozones. Roads can be snowy in winter, so ask before you drive |
| Rafting | The operator decides on the day. One operator does not run the Pescador rapid at winter water levels |
| Huilo Huilo | The Salto waterfall can run without water at times |
The Villarrica volcano is under a technical yellow alert since 4 September 2026. The Pichillancahue glacier trail in Villarrica National Park is closed from 25 July to 31 December 2026. Do not plan around the ski lift of Centro Pillán, because its winter facilities were listed as closed. Check the current status before you travel.
Packing for the weather
Simple rules that work in every season.
Layers
The average low is under 10 °C in every month of the table, so evenings are cool even in summer. A warm layer belongs in the bag all year.
Rain protection
Waterproof clothing is recommended for Villarrica National Park, together with sturdy hiking shoes. Keep it in the pack in the wet months.
Sun
Summer days reach the mid-20s Celsius in the table. The lake shore and the high slopes leave you in direct sun, so bring a hat and sun cream.
