Choosing a base by the lake
Villarrica and Pucón both sit on Lake Villarrica. They are separate towns, not two names for one place, and they work as different bases. Pucón is closer to the volcano road, the lake beaches of the town and the crafts centers. Villarrica is the town you pass on the way from Temuco to Pucón. Caburgua and Lican Ray are smaller lake destinations with their own character.
This page compares areas by location, not by hotel. It names no properties, because rooms, views and prices change from one building to the next. A lake-side address does not by itself mean a private beach, permission to swim or a view of the volcano, so check these for the property you are looking at. This is an independent guide, not a booking service.

Each area in detail
What the sources say, and what you need to check yourself.
Pucón town
The town reaches the lake at Playa Grande, a beach with dark volcanic sand, and at La Poza, a bay with a boat landing. A lakeside walk links the two areas. The municipal portal lists 8 active crafts centers, so a stay here keeps shops and galleries within reach. Walking times from a given property, night noise and parking differ by street, so ask the host.
Pucón guide →Villarrica
Villarrica is its own town on the same lake. It is also the place you reach on the road from Temuco before the last 20 minutes to Pucón. A stay here makes sense if you plan to spend time in the town, or if you want the Lican Ray side, which is 30 km from Villarrica and 50 km from Pucón. Do not assume it is cheaper than Pucón, because nothing confirms a general price gap.
Lake Villarrica →Lake Caburgua
Caburgua is a separate lake destination with the beaches Playa Blanca and Playa Negra. The municipal portal says it can be reached by public transport. The Ojos del Caburgua waterfalls are about 20 km from Pucón. Whether you need a car depends on the property, so check the walk to the nearest stop.
Ojos del Caburgua →Lican Ray and Coñaripe
Lican Ray lies on the northern shore of Lake Calafquén, about 30 km from Villarrica and 50 km from Pucón. Its Playa Grande and Playa Chica are separated by a wooded peninsula, and the sand is of volcanic origin. Official advice is to reserve accommodation early for January and February because of higher visitor numbers. This is advice and not a legal requirement. Coñaripe has its own beach and a thermal resort, which its operator places 75 km and about 1 hour 15 minutes from Pucón.

| Ojos del Caburgua | About 20 km |
| Menetúe hot springs | 22 km, about 25 minutes (operator estimate) |
| Huife hot springs | 33 km on paved road |
| Huerquehue National Park | About 35 km |
| Los Pozones hot springs | 35 km |
| Lican Ray | 50 km |
| Coñaripe thermal resort | 75 km, about 1 hour 15 minutes (operator estimate) |
Distances in this table are from the town of Pucón. A bed outside the town changes every figure, so measure from the property.
The volcano and your accommodation
Part of choosing where to sleep.
Current alert
The technical alert level of the Villarrica volcano was raised from green to yellow on 4 September 2026. The civil protection agency also issued an early preventive alert for Villarrica, Pucón, Curarrehue and Panguipulli. That is not a red evacuation alert. Check the current status before you travel.
Villarrica volcano →Know your evacuation plan
The civil protection agency publishes evacuation plans and a map viewer. Find the plan and the meeting point for the neighborhood you sleep in, and ask your accommodation about it at check-in. Do not rely on a general rule such as always heading for the lake or always taking the car.
The view
A volcano view cannot be promised from a lake-side address. Look at the photos of the actual room and ask the host.
What to check before you book
Questions that apply to any property.
Location and walking time
Ask how far the property is from the shore, the center and the meeting point of your tour. A map shows more than a description.
Parking and transfers
If you arrive by rental car, confirm parking. If you arrive by bus, confirm how you get from the terminal to the door.
Season and cancellation
Read the cancellation terms and book early for January and February. Terms differ by property and cannot be carried over from one to another.
Climate
Evenings are cool even in summer, and winter is wet. Ask about heating if you travel outside the summer months.
